We tested XE for large international transfers. Here is our verdict on fees, exchange rates, and overall experience.
XE is a reliable, well-regulated choice for larger transfers where reach and simplicity matter. The 190+ country network, high online limits, fast support, and fee-free structure above the threshold make it hard to overlook. For smaller transfers or the sharpest rates, Wise or Atlantic Money will serve you better. Always compare before committing, as rates can vary meaningfully by route and amount.
XE uses a two-part cost structure: a flat fee on smaller transfers and a quote-based exchange rate on all transfers. The flat fee disappears above regional thresholds, after which pricing is primarily in the exchange rate.
Rate competitiveness varies by corridor. On some pairs XE is very competitive, while on others alternatives may offer sharper pricing.
For larger transfers, the fee-free structure above thresholds and negotiable pricing can work well. For smaller or frequent transfers, compare live quotes with alternatives before sending.
XE claims over 90% of transfers complete within 24 hours. In our test, a GBP/EUR transfer sent at 9:59am arrived at 11:06am the same day. Debit and credit card payments are generally faster than bank transfers, which can take up to 4 business days via ACH. Speed depends on currency pair, payment method, and destination.
Online limits are among the highest for a consumer provider: $535,000 per transfer from the US and Canada, $750,000 from Australia and New Zealand, and £350,000 from the UK and EU. The app caps are much lower at around $50,000-60,000. Cash pickup is limited to 3,000 of your local currency per transfer (5 transfers per day), with tighter restrictions in some US states.
XE covers more than most providers: bank deposit, mobile wallet, and cash pickup via the Ria network at 500,000+ locations. Payment options include bank transfer, debit card, and credit card, though card payments sometimes carry an additional fee and not all methods are available in every corridor.
The main gap is Asia and Africa. XE has limited coverage for transfers originating from these regions, which rules it out for a significant portion of the global remittance market.
Additional tools include a currency converter, historical rate charts, and rate alerts, though these are informational rather than transactional.
Signup takes under 3 minutes: email, verification code, country, personal details, done. The transfer flow is logical and fast. I completed a full transfer setup in minutes. The desktop experience is polished; the app is functional but has recurring complaints about bugs and login issues on Android.
Customer support is a genuine strength. Live chat connects to a human in under 2 minutes and is available 24 hours Monday to Friday in 100+ languages. Phone answered within a minute in English. Email responds within 48 hours. XE replies to 99% of negative Trustpilot reviews within 24 hours, which is exceptional.

Trustpilot: 4.1/5 from 57,000+ reviews, with 82% five-star. Positive feedback focuses on speed, ease of use, and support quality. Negative reviews cite compliance holds, delayed funds, and occasional rate discrepancies between what was shown and what was applied. The 99% response rate to negative reviews is notable.
App Store: 4.3/5 US, 4.1/5 UK. Google Play: 3.5/5 from 100,000+ reviews, with persistent reports of bugs and poor complaint resolution on Android.
